RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING & COMPETENCIES
Introduction
A process is in place to enable participants when attempting Competency
based Certificate Courses to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning
and Recognition of Current Competencies (RPL/RCC) for competencies they
already possess.
This procedure is not to be confused with the procedure
for Credit Exemption although, as part of the RPL/RCC process, credits
may be awarded.
Procedure
The process for RPL/RCC will be:
- Applicants for RPL/RCC will attend a briefing session
on the process and be provided with an RPL/RCC application form. The
form will indicate the types of evidence required against the Elements
for each unit of competence or performance criteria for each unit of
competency.
- Applicants will complete a self-assessment against
the Elements or performance criteria and prepare a portfolio of
evidence to support their claim.
- Participants will submit their application together
with their evidence to the Director of Education at AMI Education.
- The Director of Education will arrange for a Workplace Assessor or RPL/RCC Panel to review the evidence provided.
- Following the review of evidence, the Workplace Assessor/Panel will:
- Provide recognition against the competencies claimed, or
- Request provision of additional evidence, or
- Arrange an interview/workplace assessment or other
method to obtain additional evidence and verify evidence previously
provided.
- Following the review, interview/workplace assessment
and/or provision of additional evidence, the panel will determine
whether or not RPL/RCC will be given for a unit of competence, unit of
competences or the total Certificate.
- Applicants will be advised as soon as the decision has been made.
- A Certificate of Competency or Statement of
Achievement will be issued as soon as practicable after the assessment
has been completed.
- Applicants have the right to appeal against the
assessment decision in accordance with the procedure at Section 8 of
the Code of Practice.

RECOGNITION OF CURRENT COMPETENCE (RCC)
General Information Regarding RCC:
The Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) process recognises what you
have already learned from your life and work experience, and other
courses, and measures these acquired competencies against the course
you intend to complete. If, through the RCC process, you are able to
demonstrate that you already possess specific competencies included in
the course you intend to complete, you may be granted RCC for some or
all of that course (and be exempted from participating in these
sections of the program).
The RCC process used for this course at AMI Education incorporates 2 stages:
- Completion and submission of the RCC Application Form, and;
- Participation in the RCC Interview.
Making an Application:
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
- The RCC form asks you to provide information about
yourself and the knowledge and skills that are the basis for your
application for RCC.
- Please take time to carefully work out the skills and
knowledge that you presently possess which match the Elements of the
course. Elements are listed in Section 2 of the form. The lines ruled
opposite the Elements are not for “answers” but rather
provide space for you to write notes that will assist you during the
subsequent interview).
- Please use block letters when completing the RCC Application Form
Structural Overview of the RCC Application Form:
This RCC Application Form contains the following sections:
Section 1: General Information – this section provides the RCC assessor with information about yourself and your experiences.
Section 2: Course Information
– this section provides an overview of the relationship between
your existing competencies and the specific Elements of the course your
RCC application applies to.
Once you have completed both sections of this form, please retain 4 copies of the document and forward the original to:

The RCC Interview:
After your RCC Application Form has been reviewed you will probably be
invited to attend an RCC interview. This interview will be scheduled at
least one week after the receipt of your application. In some cases,
RCC applicants may be required to demonstrate a particular skill either
at the interview or as a separate stage of the RCC process, but you
will be given plenty of notice and clear delineation of the skills
required if a skill demonstration is necessary for your application.
You are encouraged to ask a person who knows about your
existing knowledge and skills to come to the interview with you. This
person would normally be your supervisor, and their role in the
interview is to assist you to present and verify your RCC claims.
When you attend your RCC Interview, please bring along
4 copies of your RCC Application Form. One is for yourself, to serve as
a ‘memory jogger’ as you participate in the interview
process (the notes you have made in Section 2 of the form will assist
you to ensure you present your case effectively). The remaining 3
copies are for panel members, and for your work supervisor if you
choose to invite them to attend. In addition to the RCC Application
Form, please also bring to the RCC interview anything that you believe
will assist your application, such as:
- Relevant work samples eg: copies of memos, letters, reports etc which you have prepared yourself;
- Copies of any statements, references, or articles about your employment or community development;
- Outlines of any relevant training you have received /
courses you have attended, along with statements of attainment,
certificates etc;
- Copies of personal career development plans, or other staff development plans.
